Can you see the shuttle launches from Rotonda?

Postby Diane Shaw » Fri Jan 29, 2010 2:44 pm

This is probably a dumb question, but I am wondering if Rotonda residents can see Kennedy Space Center shuttle launches. Are they bright enough for us to see? Is there somewhere close by that is a better spot for viewing? There is going to be a daylight launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery on March 18. So far, It is planned for 1:45 PM. Can someone give advice on where to look? Are there any groups that gather to look for it?

They should be visible from here if the skies are clear. We have seen one of each(night and day) fron a condo on placida road so it shouldn't be a problem from here. The day launch wasn't nearly as spectacular as the night one.
Turtle poachers in Rotonda will be SUNK.. Then they will be reported.

Diane,

Find a clearing with a view (as low an angle as possible - we just go out in our front yard) towards the Northeast and you should be able to see the launch. When using binoculars, I have seen the solid-rocket boosters separate.

I don't know of any groups that gather to view the launches.
Enjoy life, it's not a dress rehearsal.

Wow, that is good news. Thanks Ken and Andy! My grandkids will be here on the 18th. This will be a great way to celebrate the day after St. Pat's Day. I have some binoculars that are pretty good so I am going to be on the lookout.

Diane, you should be able to see from your front yard. Keep in mind it happens fast but it's pretty obvious what it is when you see it. With the naked eye you can see the fire and the vapor trail as long it's clear out. Pretty impressive when you think of how far away it is.

Just watched the shuttle launch from the front yard. Very impressive and clear. Not a cloud in the sky. After the launch the sun rising was lighting up the vapor trail and turning it a shade of red. this part was at about 6:50.

My wife and I saw the last launch from our back yard. The space station was also passing over when it launched. Unfortunately it will be the last night launch. We will try to see the next launch you spoke of. Good luck with it. You can also get a schedule for the space station crossings from the NASA web site.
