Aquatic/Canal Bank Committee
Minutes - February 28, 2007

 

Present: Nick Gizzi, Chair., Norb Zoltowski, Bob Seneca, Cleon Kern, Olga Durham, Jack Mahaun, Earl Haas and Richard Starvino.

Absent: Nancy Marshall, Bob Winter and Jim Roberts

Management: Dianne Brophy, Secretary

Other Members/Visitors Present: Derek Gilbert, Joseph Romano, and John Farrell of  Florida Aquatics

 

Chairman Gizzi, called the meeting to order at 4:00 pm. Roll call was taken. Minutes were accepted with date change.

Chairman Gizzi said he has not gotten any response from Attorney DeBoest concerning documents on who has control of outfall maintenance.

Nancy Marshall has resigned and Jim Roberts has asked to be put on inactive list as far as the committee is concerned, but will continue to monitor the dam.

Lake Watch needs volunteer. A leader is needed to coordinate this effort and data.

Oakland Hills: Kathy Corron and Dave Gray (have boat) and Linda Crombie

Pebble Beach: Nick Gizzi (has boat) and Joe Romano

Broadmoor: Warren Wykel and possibly Leo Haney

White Marsh: Bob Winter, Ted Anderson and Denny McComb.

Earl Haas volunteered for Pine Valley Jack Mahaun volunteered for Long Meadow and Bob Seneca volunteered for Pinehurst.

There was discussion on the Proposed Aquatic Canal System Subcommittees:

Subcommittee 1, Aquatic & Marine Life Habitat and Subcommittee 2, Aquatic Vegetation Control Committee will become one (1) committee. It was suggested that Florida Aquatics could be involved in these committees.

Subcommittee 2. Canal Water Level Control/Stormwater Outflow.

Subcommittee 3. Aquatic Trash Monitoring/Cleanup Committee. John Farrell of Florida Aquatics stated that his men pickup a barrel full of trash each time they go out and treat the canals. Mr. Farrell stated a majority of this trash is from new homes being built and the subcontractors let trash blow into the canals. He also asked if there could be someway that his company be compensated for this service.

Subcommittee 4 Education. Discussion ensued.

Olga suggested that Lake Watch be contacted to give instructions on taking samples and proper storage of samples when there is a sufficient number of volunteers.

Olga also talked about the article in the newspaper stating that Rotonda West has the poorest water in the area. Discussion ensued. Bob Winters followed up and found that the contaminates come from Rotonda Heights and the Grove City area.

Cleon Kern spoke about the 4 to 1 slope needed for houses on the canal banks. He stated that at one time these were checked when the houses were being built. Discussion followed. It was suggested that perhaps the Developer could give a
handout to the builders when they apply for building approval. It was stated that there is a section in the building packet explaining this.

There was discussion about the weirs and the need to place permanent structures on both ends of the Rotonda River Plans will be drawn up by Norb Zoltowski and estimates sought from providers.

The Table of Contents for the 5-year plan was discussed.

There was discussion on Littoral Zone areas. They would be maintained by Florida Aquatics per John Farrell.

Jack Mahaun suggested that Aquatic/Canal Bank meeting start at 3:30 p.m. instead of 4:00 p.m.

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 5:30 pm

The next meeting date will be March 28, 2007 at 3:30 pm.
